about

I had something setup with my pedalboard/patchbay for another piece I was working on, and I didn't want to touch that while making this, but I realized I could re-use those signal paths with different sounds from my DAW and iPad. I wanted to try playing with a bunch of instruments I hadn't yet used in a completed track.

It started with the Rhodes, which of course had to go. I built up a few more layers while trying to keep a lounge aesthetic, even adding a second electric piano (Felt's Cinemo). Then it started to feel a bit soupy (thanks to the pedal chains I didn't want to touch) and I started leaning into that. I used some acoustic instruments I will play with but not really record with - a Ukelele my partner got me as a gift, and an oldschool-style Melodica I've had for a long time, and running them through the pedal chains from the other project. I liked these enough that I'm actually making some sampled instruments from them, even though they didn't make the final cut.

When it came time to remove layers, the Rhodes and the Melodica were removed outright (first and last), and from the four layers I got to keep, I really only had one choise each for keeping rhythm (Ruismaker Noir, which I used on the last nudge), harmony (the reed ensemble.. really it's like three or four notes at any given time), and melody (the second e-piano). Which left me a lot of great options for texture.

I wasn't too happy with the main ten-layer piece, but I do like this four-layer one quite a bit.
