The Challenge:

Part 1:

This month we will all be covering the same song, but in a very unique way.

Get your listening ears ready, y'all.

I want you to deeply connect with a place that has a very significant meaning for you. Maybe somewhere you get your creative ideas, or some place that has a special memory for you. Really listen to everything that's going on around you. Explore the relationships among any and all sounds whether natural or technological, intended or unintended, real, remembered or imaginary.

The first part of your submission is to record that ambiance for 4 minutes and 33 seconds, inspired by the infamous composer John Cage's 4'33. This does not have to be a professional grade recording, even a phone recording is perfectly fine. What is important is the connection to the place.

Part 2:

We have our places, now let's create our spaces.

It's finally music making time.

For your song, take a look through some of the field recording submissions and write a piece of music for that place! The field recordings, write-ups, and images have all been anonymized, see what kind of creative ideas you can come up with from their images, words, and memories. Feel free to score your own recording, or challenge yourself and try someone else's. You can include as much or as little of the actual field recording as you'd like.
