The Challenge:

What do I mean by flipping it and reversing it?
Well. Somewhere in each of our music-making processes there’s a pattern. Something that we do in
a particular order time-and-time again.
For some it might be instrumental workflow. Perhaps you always start a piece by structure
mapping first, or you have a goal in mind (create such-and-such emotional impact, for example)
which you then set out to achieve. Maybe you always start by picking up a particular instrument,
always build a song bar-by-bar instead of instrument-by-instrument, never go in with a plan and
just see what happens, etc. etc. etc.
Whatever it is, and wherever in of your process it is, there is some sort of pattern in your music
creation journey. Look at your process, evaluate it, find what the pattern is…
…and then do the opposite.
For example: I’ve noticed that I almost always get my primary percussive element down first and
save melodic elements and little bits and bobs of flair for last (which is why my pieces usually don’t
have those). This time, I’m going to get a melody down first and work “backwards” along by usual
workflow until I get to percussion last.
And that’s it! Everything else — style, genre, sound source, etc. — is entirely up to you.
