For my first part I made five instrument duos: pianos, synths, mellotron flutes, guitars, and drums(sticks/brushes). I wanted to have every instrument active pretty much all the time, even if it was sparse, while also having both a dense section and a lighter one. My first recording was a piano that was keeping steadyish time. The synths were the main melodic device and led the transition into the new key. The flutes added counterpoint and guitars were just adding decoration and accents to melody lines with the drums adding drummy things.


My first and last takes were the piano base and the brushy drums. Then the flute duo went cause they sound a bit out of place without each other. Then I picked my favorite guitar,the first synth layer, and the ornamental piano layer. I think it all balances pretty nicely, I love how the melodies feel more stretched out, and it keeps the integrity of the original dense/lite concept, mostly because of the harmony. If I turned this into something more I’d keep everything I made and just stretch it out in time and play it with the looseness of the cut version.
