This was the first nudge where I felt very proud and happy of what I made in the first round. It started loose, just with some noodling on guitar through an amp, which I hadn’t done in a while.

It felt really good to hear actual air moving from a speaker, in a room. I kept following that feeling, adding a second layer of guitar that would turn out later to be very fortuitous, since it was basically a lazy double track of my first idea, so I didn’t totally lose it.

I’m grateful my third idea didn’t come first: a field recording of a bird in the local dormant volcano that sounded a lot like it was born with a built-in pitch-shifted delay. I’ve been sitting on this “Bird Crystallizer” recording for a while and it felt like the perfect opportunity to fly it in.

From there I explored a few different support layers, adding some textural granular guitar and light percussion. I was really happy with my 10 layer piece and was patting myself on the back when I submitted it.

With 6 of those layers gone, there’s still a compelling piece in there, but doesn’t feel as magical to me. The big thing I learned is that I really, really enjoy making music with lots of subtlety, (too much?) and when each layer is very subtle it’s hard to strip things back to the core idea and have it translate.

The whole process makes me want to go back to the volcano and see if that bird’s still there, and how it sounds with the rain.
