On my Organelle, there was a sample of a flute organ I recorded in the summer that sounded really neat, so I started with that layer (needless to say, this layer was lost due to the twist). Then I added some vocal layers to create a little baby choir. Earlier in the afternoon I had doodled on my iPad, so I sampled myself singing the phrase from the doodle into the Organelle, and played it back sort of randomly over what was developing.

After the twist, I cut back on most of the choral layers and some of the textural layers. I was debating cutting all of the held vocal pads in favor of having the hiss-y loop, with textures popping in and out throughout, but I thought having one held vocal pad tied it together a better.

I started this project with 6 hours left until the part 1 deadline, in a greenroom in Connecticut, waiting for the 4th to last show after being on tour for 30 days. Staying creative on tour is really hard for me; I always have lofty goals before I leave, but as soon as I'm on the road I realize I need to sleep/veg as much as I can to stay sane. Not sure what struck me that day to feel up for a creative thing, but it felt really restorative to work on this Nudge. It was cool to test out my mobile studio rig with my iPad and TASCAM DR-40X. It was also cool to work on this not because I thought I had to. There was zero pressure to make it good, I just wanted to make art as a mental hygiene thing. I don't always work that way so I was pretty proud of myself for gathering the energy/courage to try this out. Thanks as always for the nudge!
