For part one, I was excited to be told to “do whatever I want!” However, the two problems I ran into were, 1) The creative possibilities were pretty bottomless, so it was difficult to get started, and 2) I never ever make songs with that many layersI usually end up with only three or four, so it was difficult to think of things to record.

At the end of part one, I ended up with a song that mashed up several different time signatures, layers of clean and fuzzy guitar and bass, as well as doubled harmonies and even a wine glass. The next hurdle was mixing a song with that much going on. I felt totally out of my element, but in the end, I’m actually pretty pleased with how it came out.

Part two was bittersweet. On one hand, the first layer I recorded was one of my favorite parts and also took up half of the song. On the other hand, deleting the part really decided how the finally product was going to sound, so the thinking part was done for me.
