Part 1: I’m exhausted by cables, so I used the (free) LABS plugin in Ableton. I turned off the quantized grid and the metronome in Ableton and recorded 10 different instruments from the collection, one at a time, layering each part on top of the next. I pictured someone playing each part, ten people in a room together. Each track is mono. I panned the voices around as though they were spread around in that room, with the piano in the center. I used EQ and a compressor on the master track.

Part 2: Well, so much for the piano in the center of the room. I had based the whole piece on that piano! But I recorded it first, so it had to go. In the spirit of the prompt, I selected parts that didn’t play throughout the entire piece. Their silence actually helped the story; I think this is better than the original.
