about

I recently purchased a moog subsequent 37 and I also made some bigger adjustments on a fender jaguar. So, being very excited to use these two instruments, I figured I’d restrict myself to them while making these 10 layers.

The first 5 layers were recorded and sequenced within an Octatrack.

Layer 1 (synth) - It all began with a happy arpeggio.

Layer 2 (guitar) - Trying to avoid clashing with the arpeggio I recorded a simple and dry guitar. During the mix I added a modulated delay.

At this point the song started to assume its form in my head. I had an idea of making a build up with harmonising synth leads inspired by the guitar sounds of Ratatat. This would later be followed by something that felt more mellow and down to earth. I also realised that I would have to break my own restriction since the idea had drums in it.

Layer 3-5 (synth) - Three different harmonising melodies building up towards a transition.

Knowing that the transition I was looking for required a kind of fluidity (that I’m yet to reach on the OT) I proceeded the recording of the remaining 5 layers on a computer.

Layer 6 (synth) - A simple very subby (is that a word?) bass .

Layer 7 (guitar) - Tried different sounds on these chords and ended up with a lush chorus.

Layer 8 (synth) - Noise from a Prophet Rev 2. I wanted something that made the second part feel more earthy. I recently discovered the treat of modulation noise with noise on the Rev 2. It’s like a vinyl crackle that can be controlled and I love it.

Layer 9 (drum) - Simple beat made on the Analog Rytm

Layer 10 (synth) - I tried to create a dreamy moog solo inspired by Skyline To by Frank Ocean but I’m not really there yet with the Subseq37. I’ll get there someday. In the meanwhile, here’s this.

Looking forward to the plot twist.
